My Minimalist Journey – Part 2

One of the most powerful things I did to start this decluttering journey is give myself permission to just throw things away. My in-laws have a huge family garage sale every year, and they have been gracious enough to help me by collecting the boxes of stuff I am getting rid of and storing them for this future event.

However, I tend to overthink things: Is this useful? Is this worth anything? Should I sell it online?

When I get stuck on something, I have given myself full permission to just throw it away. It doesn’t matter how useful or worthwhile it is when it is causing a mental breakdown by remaining in my house! So today, I am taking 10 bags out to my garbage bin. Most of it is genuinely trash, but some of it is just stuff that hung me up and paralyzed my decluttering journey. It’s not worth my time, effort, and mental capacity to deal with these items!

When the decision comes down to managing my clutter properly or my mental health, I am going to choose my mental health. In my current state of mind, I cannot let the little things stop my progress.

Post-publication note: A year later, I still sometimes say (out loud), “I give myself permission to throw it away.”

An avid reader and aspiring author, I am hoping to share a little magic in the mundane aspects of life. As a mom of two and married to my best friend, God has been very good to me. I want to share a little light in my corner of the world.
